Peanuts and Heart Health

Nutrition research is revealing surprising insights about peanuts. The nuts contain nutrients and compounds that benefit the heart, one of which is resveratrol, an antioxidant that is found in red wine and thought to support cardiovascular health.

Peanuts contain antioxidant polyphenols, beta sitosterol, and flavonoids and are a good source of monounsaturated fat, the type of fat that is part and parcel of the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet. Learn more about peanuts and heart health.

Hi Athlyn. Nice information of peanuts. However, is it true that peanuts contain carcinogenic substance? I have heard of it from my friends. :-)

Hi Walter,

Peanuts, if moldy, can contain harmful substances--aflatoxins that are carcinogenic. As with any foodstuff, it is always the course of wisdom to eat when fresh. I'm including a link to information about aflatoxins: http://www.ehso.com/ehshome/aflatoxin.php
