Gentile, D.A. & Anderson C.A (2003) has done extensive research in which supports the theory that video games lead to violence. Olson, C.K. (2003) claims media violence has no correlation to youth violence. One thing is for sure is that this will be an ongoing debate for years to come as the demand for more violent games increase even if the rate of violence follows a similar rate of growth as the trend is today.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

According to Gentile, D.A & Anderson, C.A. (2003), “researchers consider as “violent” those games in which the player can harm other characters in the game… In many popular video games, harming other characters is the main activity. It is these games, in which killing occurs at a high rate, that are of most concern to media violence researchers, child advocacy groups, and parents.” (p. 351) It is further noted by Gentile, D.A & Anderson, C.A. (2003) that an increasing amount of young children are most interested in violent video games “in which the main action is predominately human violence or fantasy violence.” (p. 351) However, blaming the manufacturer is not the problem. These games are not for sale to minors and have been regulated to curtail the sale to minors. Parents should take responsibility for what games they are buying for their child.

For more on this article read: Video Games and Teen Violence CorrelationsChris Stonecipherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01087949184100162498noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8681424775396335246.post-61272468407014543982012-02-09T19:30:00.001-08:002012-02-09T19:32:44.715-08:00Try Word Press for Convienance!Chris Stonecipherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01087949184100162498noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8681424775396335246.post-34864259129492043182011-12-21T23:56:00.000-08:002011-12-22T00:01:54.045-08:00Who is Involved in Special Education Planning? Many parents have no idea about the laws that protect special needs/disabled children’s right for a free and appropriate education. DI is similar in characteristics to untreated Diabetes ( or Diabetes Mellitus) but without the onset of blood glucose elevation. One of the major differences between DI and standard Diabetes is the fact that your urine does not contain glucose.

To diagnose Diabetes Insipidus and distinguish it from other possible causes of excessive urination, the patient is given a fluid deprivation test. This test helps find out what is causing the DI and determines the type of Diabetes Insipidus the person has. The test results will determine that one of three causes are to blame medically.

Over the course of the next few weeks, I'll be providing you incites on the inner workings of the gangs, symbolism of certain material items, and other such related details.

As an opening, I'd like to give you a bit of summary on the first chapters.

Mendoza-Denton’s fieldwork primarily takes place at Sor Juana High School, located in a suburb of the San Francisco Bay area, surrounded by Euro-Americans. The conversations dive deep into the lives of ‘traditional’ girls who are typically recent immigrants from rural Mexico, Piporras. Urban, middle-class immigrants with a more cosmopolitan attitude called Fresas, and Jocks who align with more mainstream European American philosophies.

A clear divide in immigrants and the Euro-American students is seen clearly in the places they eat lunch, the music played in the commons, as well as the cars they drive, which were nonexistent with the Piporras either being bused in or walking. Piporras were scheduled, protected, and secluded from school activities.

They usually retrieved their lunch and ate it in the ESL classrooms and never changed in public for gym class. They were isolated and much of this was due to their parents expectations. Their linguistic capabilities were mocked by teachers and classmates, as they were seen as more proficient in Spanish than English. The Westernized Fresas were assumed to speak less English than Piporras. Why? They grew up with a higher socioeconomic background in the big Metropolises of Mexico.

The Latin jock girls participated in extracurricular activities with the mainstream Euro-American jock girls. Gang girls called the jocks “coconuts” and accused them of “selling out” or being whitewashed to the mainstream.

The school was like a “mini United Nations”, in that a complex classification system using codes was in place for nonnative and native speakers. Interestingly, however, the codes were assigned after the parents took a test and their answers were categorized, and the children were placed into one of two categories: Limited English Proficient or Fluent English Proficient.

In Mendoza’s fieldwork, she came across several orally fluent “Chicano English speakers” who continued to be classified as (LEP) because they showed disruptive behavior. In a sense, the division of speakers and their abilities was more so based upon their behavior and not so much their linguistic abilities.

Sor Juana High School represents the demographic situation facing many schools in the US. The rising diversity of immigrants and their impact on school capacities, affording students the opportunity to learn about differences.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8681424775396335246.post-74086379842899658872011-02-17T20:18:00.000-08:002011-02-17T20:27:12.643-08:00Normal Structure and Function of the Musculoskeletal SystemMr. Ghaz says: Muscular dystrophies refer to a group of more than 30 genetic diseases which are characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles..Studies and estimation show that after sustaining a hip fracture (as a result of osteoporosis) 20% of patients die within, one year, 50% cannot walk without assistance while 25% may have to be admitted to nursing care homes..The Musculoskeletal System.

Calcium rich food or drinks like milk, cheese and fish should be consumed to maintain healthy and strong bones a) Vitamin D is essential to assist in the absorption of calcium. However, Washington State’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (2010) states: “Transition services must be included in an eligible student’s IEP at the latest, the year in which the student turns 16 earlier if the IEP team determines it appropriate.” At this age, an Individualized Education Plan is written with post secondary goals in mind. “What will my child do after graduation from high school special education transition services? How will I plan for my child’s future?” What kind of support will my child need? What kind of work does my child like to do and does it fit his or her skills? These are the questions addressed. After these questions are addressed by the IEP team, a transition team is formed which includes Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), The Arc of Island & Skagit County and the parents. Parents are encouraged by the IEP team to bring and include the child in the IEP proceedings. Oak Harbor School District (2010) claims that standard written policy of the Oak Harbor School District and FAPE is to include all parties involved in the child’s educational process to be part of the IEP meeting (policy 5220.1 (p. 2). It is also noted that parents are required to be notified of the time, place and the reason for the meeting at the earliest convenience for the parents to make arrangements to attend the meetings. The parents are required to be informed that they may bring guests that know the student’s disability and needs. The school district may also bring an expert or someone who knows the child’s needs as long as they inform the parent first. If the parent cannot participate, the school district can continue the IEP meetings without the parent present but clear documentation of contact attempts must be made in the report. The school district may utilize conference calls if the parent want to participate but cannot make it in person. This still must be a formal meeting scheduled in advance. Once the transition team is recruited, “The Transition Team writes an Individual Transition Plan (ITP) with planning and goals for graduation. Under the ITP, the student may participate in Special Education classes, Employment, or Socialization Programs.” (p.11) Preparing for the (“Find Law”) claims: Under the Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA), parents of a special ed child meet at least once a year with representatives of the local school district to prepare their child’s IEP – a detailed, written description of your child’s education program. Although this article is locally written, special education secondary transition funding transcends nationally due to federal policies that all states must follow.

Oak Harbor’s Transition Program policy is bound together legally by IDEA. According to Find Law (n.d), “The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is primarily a funding statute.” (¶ 1) IDEA mandates that each state be responsible for policy development of a “free and appropriate education for all children with disabilities by local agencies.” The funding comes from each state’s calculation of the number children with disabilities “between the ages of three and 21 who are receiving special education and/or other related services.” (¶ 1) Special Education Funding (OSPI, 2010), claims state funding to the districts’ “allocation for special education students age K-21 is based on maximum of 12.7 percent of the district’s basic education allocation (BEA).” For more information on this article see: The Governing Body for Special Education and Its HistoryChris Stonecipherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01087949184100162498noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8681424775396335246.post-47308781797568263072010-11-01T16:40:00.000-07:002010-11-01T17:13:17.583-07:00Access Fire Protection ServicesContact Shannongail Chernoff for all your fire protection needs which includes FM200 installations for computer rooms and paint booth fire suppression installations services. Schools are required to educated children with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. Judicial decisions about “mainstreaming” and “least restrictive environment” (LRE) vary, even within the same state. (p. 151)

School districts have argued for several years that requiring schools to mainstream children with disabilities in general education classrooms is unfair. The School Districts claim that some children with disabilities need personalized instruction that they cannot provide in a transition general education classroom. Wright & Wright, explains that a student has every right to be educated in the same classroom settings as their none disabled peers, but they are still entitled a “one-one or small group instruction out-side of regular class if necessary for them to learn.” (p. 151) Parents of children with disabilities that require specialized education and want to “mainstream their children find themselves fighting with school districts over this policy. It is important to understand that children learn quickly from modeling after other children. “Mainstreaming” children with intellectual disabilities teaches them unwritten social skills they cannot possibly learn from written instruction. Mainstreaming also teaches non-disabled children compassion, respect and helps them build new relationships. "For centuries, bitter melon has been used therapeutically in China, India, Africa and the southeastern part of the US. It is useful in medicine as an anti-tumor, antiviral and anti-diabetic source.

Test tube and animal studies of various preparations of bitter melon have shown its anti-viral activity against polio, herpes, simplex I and HIV infections. As for its anti-tumor effects, test tube studies indicates that bitter melon searches for and kills leukemia cancer versus normal/healthy white blood cells. We had so much fun the first night using it, I actually lost track of the kids bed time. The morning after our first night of using PlayStation®Move, I certainly felt that I got the best workout in a long time and had tremendous fun with my kids. My kids look forward to family game night 3 times a week. The youngest two have even developed healthy competition as a result of the wonderful game. Special thanks to Genie for granting me the PlayStation®Move and the three wishes. The first wish was losing weight, the second was a fun exercise program and the third wish was spending more quality time with my children.

Brunswick Pro Bowling for PlayStation®Move is our favorite game. We have always been avid bowlers, and my kids are always trying to be the family top dog in bowling. It is a great workout and cheaper than nights out to the bowling alley. The coolest feature of it all is that it only cost $99 with the MOVE bundle package to have motion gaming exclusively to your existing PlayStation®3!

Chris Stonecipherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01087949184100162498noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8681424775396335246.post-19249417776402291942010-10-07T18:25:00.000-07:002010-10-07T18:39:43.130-07:00Washington State Fathers Network Annual ConferenceThe Fathers Network is a group of men who have children that have a disability. According to Roseberg & Wilcox (2006), “The Washington State Fathers Network (WSFN) has served over 1,000 families in the past 20 years. Founded on the belief that men are crucial in the lives of children, WSFN is a powerful voice for increasing the involvement of men in all aspects of family life, and provides support and resources for all men involved in the life of a child with special health care needs or developmental disabilities.” There are also grandfathers who have taken on the parental role of raising their grandchild with a disability because the parent may not be able or have the coping skills to be a parent. These men are supported in our Fathers Network too. Many of these fathers including myself need friendships with other men who understand our joys, tears, frustrations and challenges of raising special needs children. We typically meet once a month and get together for coffee, sometimes a glass of wine, good laughs, sharing stories, and lending an ear to a father who needs advice. Some of the fathers can only meet on an annual basis. One year we even went sailing.

October 2, 2010 was a day that many fathers including myself got together will never forget. We held our Washington State Fathers Network Annual Conference. It was held at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington. There were approximate 120 men present that have a child or sometimes multiple children with disabilities. Advocacy classes such as Positive Behavioral Support, The New Health Care Reform Law, Wills and Guardianship were presented by qualified trainers. It was defeated by the Philippine government with assistance of the United States by December 9, 1989.

On November 30, 1989, I was awakened from my rack in the barracks by several Sergeants banging on my door. “Get Up! Get Up! You have 10 minutes to get dressed and out on the front walk in formation!” This instruction was given up and down the hallway as they pounded on every marine’s door. Usually when your door gets pounded on at 0300, there is something serious happening or about to happen. I jumped out of my rack, threw on my green tee shirt, camouflaged trousers, blouse (shirt) and cover (hat) and combat boots and ran out the door so fast that my boot laces were dragging behind.

Read more: Sleep Deprived Marines and Our Mission

You might also be interested in The Veteran's Post Card and A Piece Of Local Military HistoryChris Stonecipherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01087949184100162498noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8681424775396335246.post-49273302010681450082010-09-26T08:23:00.000-07:002010-09-26T08:33:04.679-07:00Autism Problems Explained in ReseachScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2005) — New research from Melbourne's Howard Florey Institute helps to explain why children with autism spectrum disorders (autism) have problem-solving difficulties.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging technology (fMRI) the Florey scientists have shown that children with autism have less activation in the deep parts of the brain responsible for executive function (attention, reasoning and problem solving).

Research leader Dr Ross Cunnington said autism was known to have a biological cause, but this neuroimaging research clearly showed the dysfunction in the brain that accounted for why children with autism have problems with their executive function. For obvious reasons, most people would like to prevent this disease and its many complications. Since blood sugars are high in people with diabetes, it’s natural to assume that sugar is the “bad guy”. Does eating too much sugar cause diabetes?

Can Eating Sugar Cause Diabetes: The Two Types of Diabetes

There are two types of diabetes, and each has a different cause. In type 1 diabetes, insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed. Since insulin escorts glucose into cells, the resulting lack of insulin causes glucose levels to rise in the bloodstream.
Read more: Does Eating Sugar Cause Diabetes?Chris Stonecipherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01087949184100162498noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8681424775396335246.post-47339807770091289222010-09-08T18:31:00.000-07:002010-09-08T18:41:22.278-07:00Jessica's Early Years With AutismIn my last article, The Day I Saw My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I discussed how Jesus helped my wife and I get through a difficult time with Jessica hospitalized as an infant with meningitis and was on life support for more than a month. With this article will be the first in a series that gives you insight into Jessica’s life from the point she returned to us from her battle with meningitis to her current age of 19 years.

Around the age of six months old, Jeanette noticed that Jessica still wasn’t sitting up on her own and had terrible crying spells that would follow with blank stares. Jeanette took her to see the pediatrician and he referred us to a neurologist for further testing. The neurologist told us after testing that Jessica was having grand mall seizures. According to Mayo Clinic Staff, “A grand mal seizure — also known as a tonic-clonic seizure — features a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions. It’s the type of seizure most people picture when they think about seizures in general. Separate studies by researchers at North Carolina State University, Notre Dame, the University of Minnesota, and Michigan State University all arrive at similar conclusions about ADHD.

For those unfamiliar with ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders of childhood. Children with ADHD typically have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behavior, and/ or are overly active. The causative and risk factors for ADHD are unknown, but current research has shown that genetics plays an important role. According to CDC data and statistics: As of 2006, there are 4.5 million 5 to 17-year-old children diagnosed with ADHD. Diagnosis of ADHD increased an average of 3% per year from 1997 to 2006. Prevalence also varies substantially by state; for example, Colorado with 5% vs. 11.1% in Alabama."
For more on this article see: Studies Claim That One Million Children Misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Chris Stonecipherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01087949184100162498noreply@blogger.com1
